ROOT
ROOT — Remaining Ourselves Over Time — proposes adaptable homes, professional care and lasting relationships in a freely chosen, mixed-age community, supported by specialist expertise in Littleborough.
01 — The proposal
Home in Todmorden. Expertise in Littleborough.
The two centres have different roles. Todmorden remains home through almost every stage, while Littleborough supports the care industry. Specialist expertise would normally travel to residents; relocation would be exceptional.
An ordinary home through changing needs
The proposed homes are desirable, non-institutional, step-free and adaptable. The mix includes family homes, space for guests or carers and units that can be combined. A household would choose to live here; residence would not depend on age, diagnosis or eligibility for care.
Control stays with the resident
Housing rights would not depend on accepting a particular care provider. Provider choice, advocacy, accessible complaints and safeguarding are core proposed protections. Research would require separate, withdrawable consent. Monitoring and assistive technology would be opt-in, understandable and removable, with resident-controlled data and non-digital alternatives.
Separate the home, the building and care
ROOT uses BVU's asset-locked regional building utility model. Its capital repayment component ends when repaid, leaving only building maintenance and repairs charges. Home costs, the BVU charge, assessed health and care funding, and optional services remain transparent and separate.
Sustain professional relationships
Stable core teams would be backed by a professionally trained regional relief pool. The proposal excludes gig-style intimate care and seeks continuity when a provider fails.
